Jay Thompson, D.O.

Dr. Jay Thompson is a board-eligible Orthopaedic Surgeon whose practice focuses on hip, shoulder, knee and sports medicine injuries. He is fellowship-trained in sports medicine with further training in hip preservation. Dr. Thompson specializes in hip arthroscopy, hip preservation, hip reconstruction, lower extremity sports medicine, as well as hip and knee arthroplasty.

Dr. Thompson joined SOSI in 2023 and practices out of the Steamboat, Fraser, and Craig locations. He is also a member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Medical Pool, traveling internationally with the U.S. Paralympic ski team in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Dr. Thompson attended medical school at Rocky Vista University where he was an honor society member of the Sigma Sigma Phi and achieved top 10% honors. He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Oklahoma State University Medical Center where he was awarded Resident of the Year and Chief Resident titles. He completed a sports-medicine fellowship at Taos Orthopaedic Institute in Taos, New Mexico. 

Dr. Thompson continued to seek further training in hip arthroscopy and hip preservation with Dr. Ben Domb at the American Hip Institute, Dr. Derek Ochiai at the Nirscl Orthopedic Institute and with Dr. Omer Mei-Dan at University of Colorado Hip Preservation. He was awarded the Arthroscopy Association of North America E.L.I.T.E scholarship to attend the Advance hip arthroscopy course.

Growing up in Boulder, Dr. Thompson spent most of his time skiing, swimming, and playing football. While at medical school in Colorado, Dr. Thompson met his wife Jaime, a Steamboat native. Jaime, a board certified anesthesiologist, introduced Dr. Thompson to all the wonderful things Steamboat has to offer. Throughout his training, Dr. Thompson worked closely with Dr. Sauerbrey, strengthening his connection to Steamboat orthopedics.
