Dr. Patrick Johnston

Patrick Johnston, D.O.

Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon; Fellowship Trained in Hand and Elbow Orthopaedic Surgery;
Certified in Hand Surgery

Dr. Patrick Johnston is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon whose practice focuses on providing comprehensive care for ailments from the fingertips to the elbow. He is fellowship-trained in hand, wrist, and elbow orthopaedic surgery and is additionally certified in hand surgery. He is one of the few surgeons in the region trained in endoscopic carpal tunnel releases, as well as WALANT surgery, which stands for “wide-awake local anesthesia, no tourniquet,” performing a procedure using just local anesthesia which can often be done in the office.

Dr. Johnston is the proud recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Award for Humanism and Excellence in the Teaching of Medicine. He has authored multiple publications and has guest-lectured around the country. He is an Orthopaedic Preceptor for the UC Health Family Medicine Residency and participates in educational programming with CU Hand Fellowship.

Dr. Johnston moved to Steamboat in 2016 and is one of the founding partners of Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute (SOSI). He was drawn toward hand surgery because it incorporates aspects of orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery. Dr. Johnston feels this comprehensive training makes him a better surgeon overall. “Hand surgery is a unique specialty that allows me to work with patients from children to the elderly. The complexity of hands and their importance in people’s lives keeps me motivated to continue to advance my knowledge. I enjoy getting each patient back to the activities he or she enjoys.”

Dr. Johnston completed both medical school and his residency at Midwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He then pursued additional training, completing a hand, elbow, and microvascular surgery fellowship through Grandview Hospital and Ohio University. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association of Hand Surgeons and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as well as the Wilderness Medical Society.

Dr. Johnston practices at SOSI locations in Steamboat Springs, Craig and Fraser, Colorado. He also provides outreach care in Alliance, Nebraska. As a previous junior elite-level triathlete, Dr. Johnston enjoys all forms of cycling. He lives in Steamboat Springs with his wife Ginger and their three children. He is also passionate about supporting the Yampa Valley Autism Program that provides support to people in the community, including his stepson Xavier.
